Red Carpet Knockoffs

Celebrities have a unique ability to put something on, make it look fabulous and inspire us to want it. The price tag is usually way too high to be within our grasp, though. With a bit of creativity and research, you can steal their looks for a fraction of the price.
Before you can steal a celeb's style, you have to know which one you want. Watch some red carpet events, such as movie awards, screenings or Hollywood parties, and keep your eye out for a star that resembles your body type and complexion. A dress that looks fabulous on a dark skinned, dark haired starlet may not be as flattering if you're pale skinned and fair haired.
When you're watching these, consider that both red carpet and runway trends often run several months ahead of what's about to hit the stores. If you want to copy a recent style, you'll need to be resourceful in your shopping. Maybe you can emulate the feeling of the gown, rather than the style itself.

With that said, what seems to be in this year?
Look for strapless dresses with lean silhouettes, but avoid them if they have billowing skirts. The designer's previews for the stars highlighted monochromatic, well fitted gowns. Just-off-white and black were big hits, as were other neutrals. If you can't (or don't want to) pull off a strapless dress, look for a similarly fitted style with an interesting, asymmetrical neckline.
A few, more dramatic, gowns have revived a style reminiscent of flamenco dancers. These gowns fit tightly to the knees or calves, where they finish in a full skirt. While they're probably hard to come by in most stores, if you're handy with a needle and thread you may be able to modify a full length gown to emulate this style.
Accessories this year are low-key. Starlets have been spotted on the red carport with simple clutches and heels that match their gowns. Unlike years past, these items are being used purely as accessories, and not as statements in and of themselves.
Another accessory in short supply is jewelry. Few celebs are donning necklaces, and the ones that do wear modest pieces to accent their neckline. Dangle earrings are the accessory of choice this year, but keep them either small and bold or long and elegant.
Here are a few key points to remember when you're copying a star's look this year. Keep your eye out for strapless or asymmetrical necked classical dresses in neutral or light colors. Choose a handbag and heels that will complement your gown. Don't overdo the jewelry, but definitely use earrings to make a statement or play up your hair.
